2022 Commemorative workshop for Tony Allan (1937-2021) Tony's legacy.
On 15 April 2021, Prof. Tony Allan passed away after a long career of scholarship devoted to sustainable water and food management. Four hundred days on, we invited colleagues and friends from near and far to honour Tony Allan through a workshop discussing current thinking on food-and-water security, as featured in the special issue of Water International that commemorates Tony’s life in academe and beyond.
2023 Through the fog of productive water and food futures: what are the big questions and are we seeing them?
How can we make sense of the environmental, political, economic and social lessons from recent times? What can we learn for future crises? Whilst we may be water and food secure by 2050, the near future looks very uncertain from the perspectives of geopolitical risk, climate change and an agreed ‘settled’ science.
2024 Water solutions for water challenges; towards universal global themes or tailored local fixes?
We discuss the ongoing water challenges and crises, and our response to them. We reflect on whether and how the transportability, funder-facing and language of universal global themes (e.g. the circular economy, nature-based themes, the WEF nexus) inform (or fail to inform) local bespoke solutions and actions.
2025 Water and food in 2025: coping with growing global uncertainties
This year’s topics include England’s pressing water issues, whether water management needs research or just action, the promises and fallacies of artificial intelligence in water management, and how to communicate water issues at a time of populism and uncertainty.
